Jillis Kruk is a composer of electronic music, performer and sonologist. As a child he cried over the death of his tamagotchi, not over the death of his rabbit. He started making 'noise poetry' as a teenager, combining poems with self built electronic circuits and strobes. Jillis sought to feed his interest in sound as a material and to acquire craftsmanship. This was pursued at the Institute of Sonology at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. This environment raised his interest in subjects like information theory, computer programming, acoustic context and media culture. Whilst learning about the composition of electronic music he participated in numerous theatre projects, as sound designer and composer for dance. After working with students from the music-theatre master T.I.M.E. on a project for Holland Festival, Jillis returned to performing himself. His current research deals with the electronic medium as an incentive for performance.

DISPOSITIONS

Coming from an inter-disciplinary field of interest, I am convinced about the importance of working together with people from different disciplines. Sound is a fascinating material and in music and the digital domain, there are vast areas to discover. Hearing is an elegant sense and can be somewhat mystical because of a predominant ocularcentric culture. Visual culture is dead. As an artist you have social responsibility in the way you place yourself in society and interact with it. Space is political, so is sound as it travels through space and resonates without clean-cut boundaries.
